UNCOMMON ART RESIDENCY

The Uncommon Art Residency began when the doors first opened in 2017 at Sound View Greenport, New York and has expanded to Anvil Hotel Jackson in Wyoming. Created by hotel owner, Erik Warner, these residencies have worked to be havens for creatives from all over the country. Community, collaboration and connection are at its core. For the last seven years contemporary artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, and craftsmen have explored their unique medium and connect with the local community. The influence of location and community have sprouted new ideas and work for all of our residents.

Our artists in residence pull inspiration from the natural environment and connection to the community.

About the Uncommon Art Residency

In Greenport NY, the Uncommon Artist Residency Director, Kara Hoblin will be leading the curatorial direction for the group exhibit at the Center. She is the Director of Guest Culture for The Anvil Hotel, & Sound View Greenport and Owner of the North Fork Art Collective with years of curatorial experience.

In Jackson Hole, the Uncommon Artist Residency Director, Travis Walker works with local partners to host the program including the Art Association of Jackson Hole. Walker is a full time artist and the founding director of the Teton ArtLab.  Participating artists are able to work in the studio spaces at the Art Association during their Jackson residency.

The residency program allows artists to create whatever they wish and only ask in return that the artist hosts a community initiative. As part of the residency, each artist is invited to share something with the community whether it be a performance, an open working session, or even a display of their work. In many cases this can be a talk or lecture but artists have hosted classes, had performances, & have explored unique ways to connect with the community.

Celebrating Local, Regional & National Musicians

Uncommon Sound Residency

Their passion took them to the streets, our passion brought them to Greenport.

Music has always been part of the DNA of Sound View Greenport and our residency programs. First established with Joe’s Pub, part of the Public Theater, we originally combined musicians with our uncommon art program, but the work and the experiences for musicians are very different. So we are giving them their own voice.

As a part of the Artist Residency program we offer a weeklong (sometimes longer) stay for musicians to create their own magic.

Sound View Greenport: A Gathering Space of Creative Minds

Building a Creative Community

As artists, musicians and dancers converge at Sound View, a powerful conversation of the creative community ignites. With open studios, writer salons, and artist lectures, we tap into the energy of community to celebrate inclusion and creativity. Engagement and perspective are key elements in experiencing the power of life. Our artist participants will therefore host open working sessions, display key works, and perform, inviting the community into rare opportunities to witness the artist’s journey, from inspiration to completion.
